Despite the reputation of Colorado’s “environmental consciousness,” we are in the bottom 20 of the nation’s water quality ranking! This is due to large agricultural areas producing contaminants, our aging pipes, and other reasons. For the sake of narrowing down this vast state, I’ll focus mostly on Denver’s water supply and surrounding areas.
Colorado’s Water Contaminants
According to cleeancoolwater.com, “Colorado cities and towns, tap water may be affected by THMs. As a result, many Colorado water boards recommend carbon filtering, either in-line or at the point of use. Recently, The Denver Post reported on a scheme by Denver water to begin sending residents Brita filters as of April 2020.”
Denver Water, the water utility responsible for the collection, storage, quality control, and distribution of drinking water to 1.4 million people, says the water is perfectly safe, but they do recommend using a filter if you are concerned about Lead and Chlorine byproducts.

Why Your Tap Water Tastes Strange

Colorado Springs Utilities reports a hardness measurement of 1.3 – 2.8 grains per gallon (gpg), which gives its water a relatively soft rating. For comparison, Denver has a reported 4.2 gpg and the city of Pueblo has the state's hardest water at 10.6 gpg.
According To Denver Water... Denver’s water is slightly harder in the winter when many lakes and streams freeze. It is softer during late spring through fall when the snow melts and causes runoff that makes its way into the reservoirs. Denver's hard water creates scale. An initial scale usually takes two to five years to form and continues to build up over time. In older areas, while thick scale reduces the rate of flow, it prevents water from being in contact with the plumbing. This protects pipes from corrosion and customers from potentially harmful metals. When using a cold water humidifier, hardness in the water can cause residue deposits on furniture. Deposits can be minimized by using half tap water and half distilled water in the humidifier.
